I have two beautiful dogs: Luna, a Jack Russell, and Taner, a Taco Terrier. They are literally the light of my life. However, maintaining studio apartment cleanliness with two shedding, short-haired dogs can quickly become overwhelming.

If you work full-time and want to keep pet hair, dirt, and odours under control without spending every free moment cleaning, these tips are for you. We are going to cover my full daily and weekly dog cleaning routine, tackling everything from floor tiles and dog beds to shedding control, pet-friendly furniture, and smart toy storage.

Establish a Weekly Cleaning Routine for Pet Hair

Because I work full-time, weekends are my dedicated cleaning days. Doing a thorough clean each weekend keeps the smaller messes throughout the week far more manageable. To get the best results without extra effort, I always clean in a specific order:

1. Dust high surfaces first: I shake out my bedding and dust off the couch and furniture to knock loose pet hair and dust onto the floor.
   
2. Sweep the rug and floor tiles: I sweep the rug before rolling it up, then sweep the rest of the floor to collect fur and dirt using a rubber bristle broom.
   
3. Vacuum after sweeping: Sweeping first prevents my vacuum from getting clogged with heavy dog hair while picking up any fine dust left behind.
   
4. Mop with pet-safe cleaner: Finally, I mop the floors with a pet-friendly multi-purpose cleaner to leave everything fresh and sanitised.

Quick Daily Habits to Prevent Mess Buildup

A few simple habits during the week mean I do not spend my entire weekend deep cleaning. They keep my studio tidy, make weekend chores easier, and give me more time to enjoy with Luna and Taner.

• Wipe paws at the door: Clean muddy or dusty paws immediately after walks or garden playtime.
  
• Tidy up pet toys: Put away dog toys after playtime to keep floor clutter under control in a small space.
  
• Wash food and water bowls daily: To prevent bacterial growth and keep the feeding area fresh.
  
• Quick night-time vacuum: Give the couch and bed a fast pass with a hand vacuum before settling in for the evening.
  
• Reset living areas: Put everyday items back where they belong before going to bed.

These small daily habits take only a few minutes, but they make a massive difference by the time Saturday rolls around.

Manage Dog Shedding with Regular Grooming

The best way to keep fur and dander under control in a studio apartment is to manage it at the source.

Both Luna and Taner have short, wiry coats that shed far more than you’d expect. To keep loose hair to a minimum, I brush them once a week with a deshedding tool. This removes loose fur before it ends up on my floors, soft furnishings, and clothes.

Beyond keeping your home cleaner, regular grooming maintains a healthy coat, reduces shedding around the house, and offers great quality one-on-one time with your pets.

Regularly Clean Your Dog’s Bed

I’ve noticed that Luna and Taner spend significantly more time on their own bed when it’s freshly cleaned. That means they’re less likely to curl up on the couch or bed, which directly cuts down on fur transfer.

Washing your dog’s bed regularly removes ground-in dirt, skin oils, and germs while preventing lingering dog odours.

Choose a dog bed with a removable, machine-washable cover if you can. It makes cleaning the bed a lot easier. I even made a few custom covers that I swap out now and then to add a bit of personality to my studio.

If your dog sleeps in a crate, don’t forget to clean that too. Wipe down the crate frame and wash their blankets weekly to keep their sleeping space fresh and comfortable.

Clean Accidents Immediately

Even though Luna and Taner are fully potty trained, the occasional accident still happens, especially if I am home later than usual.

When an accident happens, clean it up straight away using an enzymatic cleaner. Unlike regular household cleaners or scented sprays, enzymatic cleaners break down the organic proteins in pet urine and messes, eliminating the source of the odour rather than just masking it.

Cleaning accidents immediately prevents set-in stains, stops lingering smells, and discourages dogs from re-marking the same spot.

Choose Pet-Friendly Furniture

My favourite piece in my studio is my thrifted vintage wooden sofa. When shopping for dog-friendly furniture, I had two non-negotiables: removable cushion covers and durable fabric.

Removable covers make cleaning quick and easy. Spills, muddy paw prints, and everyday dirt are much less of a hassle to deal with. After all, nothing makes a space look untidy faster than a stained couch.

I also chose performance velvet for the cushion covers. Velvet stands up remarkably well to dog claws. Unlike loose-woven fabrics, fine shedding fur does not get trapped in the weave, staying on the surface where it can easily be vacuumed or brushed off.

Proper Storage of Pet Supplies and Toys

I keep all of Luna and Taner’s toys, leashes, harnesses, and other supplies in a decorative basket inside a cupboard. I used to leave the basket out on display, but Luna quickly figured out how to tip it over to get to her favourite toys.

Storing everything out of sight keeps my studio looking tidy and makes toy rotation much more effective. Because the toys are not out all the time, they stay novel and exciting during play sessions.

Keep a Lint Roller Handy

A lint roller is my last line of defence for quick pet hair removal. It is the easiest tool for lifting fur, lint, and dander from clothing, throw pillows, and upholstery right before guests arrive or as you head out the door.

I keep one within easy reach and use it on my couch, curtains, car seats, and clothes. It is a tiny tool that pays off big when living in close quarters with dogs.

Having dogs brings so much warmth to a home, but keeping up with the hair and dirt requires a system. Proactive grooming with consistent cleaning can keep even a small studio apartment feeling spotless and fresh.
